DRAGONSLAYER
Tristan Patterson | 2010 | USA | 75 mins
Empty abandoned swimming pools, suburban streets and parking lots form the backdrop to the story of skateboarder Josh Sandoval. Drifting from suburb to suburb, Sandoval appears like the classic anti-hero part-punk and part-bohemian, avoiding the bleak certainties of everyday life in favour of the magical pleasures to be had in skateboarding, hanging out with his friends and falling in love. This world echoes that described so well by the likes of Larry Clarke and Harmony Korine.
Lensed with a true appreciation for the beauty of the everyday and with a warm intimacy that helps paint an evocative, always powerful, and occasionally seductive image of the outsider skate culture. Dragonslayer won Grand Jury awards at SxSW and it’s easy to see why. With its strangely compelling portrait of Josh, his ersatz family and friends and their itinerant lifestyle, there’s a real sense of the fleeting freedoms offered by the skateboard culture.
“A must-see doc…”Dragonslayer- is a terrific new non-fiction movie…a thrill to watch on a big screen.” - indieWIRE
“Thereʼs a high probability that it will be one of the most talked about documentaries of the year, like last yearʼs Catfish or Exit Through the Gift Shop… Dragonslayer is practically flawless.” - The Playlist
“Despite a slew of skateboarding films in recent years…Patterson’s pic arguably comes closest to channeling the cultureʼs punk vibe and youthful abandon.” - Variety
