DLUX MEDIA ARTS PRESENTS

PIXEL PIRATE 2: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT
SODA_JERK / 2011 / Australia / 55 mins

A hugely entertaining critique of intellectual property law and a speculative history of sample-based culture that takes the form of a sci-fi / biblical epic / action movie (starring Moses, Elvis, Monkey and more)! This anti-copyright epic is entirely constructed from over 300 pirated sources. With artists Soda_Jerk in attendance, this session takes the video remix into staggering new realms.

“Be afraid. Be very afraid. Because Soda_Jerk is going to alter your future through interrogating your past.” – William Yeoman, The West Australian

“A lovingly crafted and absurdly plotted feature-length video that uses layered and re-edited fragments… Ostensibly an ironic take on the status of image piracy in the age of draconian copyright laws.”  -Andrew Frost, Art & Australia

“It stars Elvis Presley doing battle with the evil Moses and his Copyright Commandments in a fight for the ancient art of the remix.” - Jaymis Loveday

SODA_JERK’S “PIXEL PIRATE 2: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT” SCREENS AS THE MAIN FEATURE IN THE RECYCLED CINEMA SESSION.

Preceding Soda_Jerk’s film is several short films by filmmakers that cleverly utilise and morph found footage into their own films:

RENO | TONY LAWRENCE | 2007 | 1:00

Early 60s discarded 16mm footage of an aspiring beauty pageant queen who swans through America’s Midwest.

AUTOMATIC MEAT PROBE | SHAWN HENNESSY | USA | 2001 | 5:00
Scissoring a couple of angry antagonists from a 1970s stunt film, leaving their machismo to howl in the celluloid void as they beat the shit out of each other and into infinity.

LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH | NICOLAS PROVOST | 2010 | BELGIUM | 7:00
A found footage horror film in which existing fragments from horror films are transmogrified into a new film where the images literally consume one other.

CONNECTING WITH NATURE | CLINT ENNS | 2011 | USA | 1:28
An instructional video that lies somewhere between the realms of infomercial and guide to spiritual enlightenment.

CAMP | PETER FREUND | 2010 | USA | 7:00
Juxtaposing the political and theatrical senses of ‘camp’ as a metaphor for our contemporary cultural deadlock between two post-modernist sensibilities.

RE-SYNC | TARA NELSON | 2010 | USA | 2:30
Fast cars, drugs and child safety tips converge in this found footage film.

ESCAPE PLAN | PAUL TURANO | USA | 2010 | 2:00
An anomaly witnessed and recorded in the evening sky on November 8, 2010 in Southern California provoked a frenzy of speculation. Is it an optical illusion, an airplane’s vapor trail, or could it be an entity from another place, fed up with earth and finally deciding to return home?
