About SUFF
The 2011 Sydney Underground Film Festival will take place from Thursday 8 September to Saturday 10 September at The Factory Theatre, Marrickville.
The festival will only program unique, quality independent films that transgress the status quo and challenge the conservative conventions of filmmaking. The festival is devoted to renewing local interest in independent and experimental film as part of an international underground film culture and aims to change an engrained culture of cinematic complacency and revitalize an enthusiasm for cinema.
Mission Statement
The Sydney Underground Film Festival is dedicated to nurturing an alternative film culture through the promotion of independent and experimental films. The festival seeks to support filmmakers who operate outside established film industry infrastructures, by providing a platform for exhibition, exposure and critical discussion.

Mark Wotherspoon is a glass sculptor based in Sydney's Inner West and also the creator of the extraordinary SUFF trophies – nicknamed THE SUFF DEAD OSCARS!
Wotherspoon creates the trophies for the festival by making use of salvaged television screens, where he melts down the glass into new forms. Wotherspoon says, “I find that the glass in old TVs holds a more significant meaning for my work – these screens have carried a lot of stories”. He also states, "My work is based in existence (in the existentialist sense) and I use the figure in various contexts to play on situations and decisions. This short life is my inspiration."
Mark Wotherspoon is also president of ESProjects (and ESP gallery), an artist run initiative (ARI) in Marrickville.

The Sydney Underground Film Festival is indebted to Mark for creating these works of art for SUFF award recipients.
