Dir. John Waters, 1974, USA, 97 mins, Comedy, Remastered

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Waters' outrageously audacious classic, Female Trouble, presented in glorious Smell-O-Rama!

Dive into the twisted life of Dawn Davenport, a bratty schoolgirl turned deranged mass murderer, all because her parents refused to buy her cha-cha heels for Christmas. Dawn, played by the incomparable Divine, embarks on a depraved journey of crime, chaos, and infamy in Waters’ second instalment of the Trash Trilogy.

Described by critic Rex Reed as containing "sex offenses that would shock the Marquis de Sade," Female Trouble is a shocking and hilarious critique of societal norms. Shot in Baltimore and featuring the Dreamlanders ensemble—Mink Stole, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Edith Massey, and Cookie Mueller—this 16mm masterpiece is packed with unforgettable scenes and quotable lines!

Don't miss this gloriously lurid satire with special scratch n’ sniff cards created especially for the 2024 Opening Night by Snivure and Scented Storytelling.

“A depraved journey of crime and chaos that shocks and delights! Divine is unforgettable in John Waters' most outrageous masterpiece.” – The Village Voice

“One of the most startling and hilarious American films ever made. Female Trouble is an unholy masterpiece of cult cinema that is just as jaw-dropping today as it was 50 years ago.” – The Guardian

SMELL-O-RAMA
PARTNERS:

Jas Brooks (Snivure) and Tammy Burnstock (Scented Storytelling) are seasoned collaborators with a shared enthusiasm for the power of scent in cinema. Together, they boast an impressive portfolio of co-produced scent-infused projects, most recently a weekend of Whiff and Wonder at Cinema NOVA, Melbourne. Beyond their creative work, Jas and Tammy's collaboration extends to the preservation of the last known Smell-O-Vision! system from 1960, further underscoring their dedication to the legacy and future of scented cinema.

Jas Brooks (Snivure) Biography:

Jas Brooks (they/them) is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Chicago and an independent media archaeologist. Their doctoral research focuses on engineering devices that chemically stimulate and manipulate the human senses to integrate smell, taste, and temperature into our digital interactions. Jas is the recipient of the 2024 Sadakichi Award for Experimental Use of Scent at the prestigious Art and Olfaction Awards, an internationally recognized accolade for scented media and art. Jas independently delves into media archaeology with a specific interest in dispelling misconceptions around historical scent technologies and associated media from the 20th century onwards. They are uncovering a rich history of over 120 scented film exhibitions, dating back to 1910. This exploration includes revisiting Behind the Great Wall in AromaRama (1959), preserving the last known Smell-O-Vision! system and the Scent of Mystery fragrance (1960), and engaging with stakeholders from dot-com era scent tech companies. Beyond academic and archaeological work, Brooks has also co-curated and produced the Twitch and Sniff Along series, which spotlighted computer games with olfactory components.

Tammy Burnstock (Scented Storytelling) Biography:
Tammy Burnstock is a writer, director, and event producer with a unique specialisation in scented immersive experiences. Her career spans several facets of the screen-based industry, highlighted by 12 years in the Children’s department at the ABC. Accomplishments include her successful olfactory restoration of the pioneering Smell-O-Vision! feature film Scent of Mystery (1960). Collaborating with the Institute for Art and Olfaction, Burnstock reimagined this newly restored film into a novel, participatory scented experience, with successful screenings in the UK, Denmark and Hollywood Cinerama Dome. In 2019, she co-directed and produced the scented documentary feature In Glorious Smell-O-Vision: The True Story of the Godfather of Scented Cinema. In addition to her film endeavors tammy works with Diversity and Disability Alliance, and with children, engaging their noses, hearts and minds in scented storytelling!
